Obituary

William H. Howie, 97, of Bedford, died on September 8, 2022, in Lincoln, Mass., following a brief illness.

Known to his family and friends as "Bumps", he had lived at Bedford Village since 1976 and was a former resident of Brighton.

Mr. Howie was born in Donkin, a small village on Cape Breton Island, Nova Scotia, Canada, to the late Fred and Edith (Cains) Howie. At the age of 11, he began working at Flint Island Lighthouse and for 10 years worked as a miner in the Donkin Coal Mine

He was married in 1946 to Mary Anderson and they had two daughters, Janet and Eldin. In 1957, the family left Canada to move to Brighton where Mr. Howie began working at the Lahey Clinic. When the Lahey Clinic moved to Burlington in 1980, he continued working in the maintenance department until his retirement.

He was well known in Bedford where he walked frequently on the bike path near his home. He loved meeting people and their dogs and had many friends.

He was predeceased by his wife Mary in 2005. He is survived by his daughters, Janet Riordan of Waltham and Eldin Joslyn and her husband, Richard of Maynard, two brothers, Douglas and Allister, and his sister, Elsie Neary all of Canada, three grandchildren, May Carey, Deborah Smith and William Joslyn and six great grandchildren.

Visitation for family and friends will be held at the Bedford Funeral Home, 167 The Great Rd., Bedford, on Sunday, September 18, from 2:00 to 4:00 P.M.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the American Heart Association, 300 5 th Ave., #6, Waltham, MA 02451.
