Walter R. Burger, 89, of Bedford, died on October 26, 2024, following a brief illness.
Mr. Burger was born in Brooklyn, New York, the son of the late Walter and Irene (Wickward) Burger. He frequently spent summers visiting Switzerland, where his father was from. Mr. Burger was also a Swiss National.
He was raised in Cambria Heights, New York, and graduated from Andrew Jackson High School in 1953. He attended Michigan State University and completed his bachelor's degree at Adelphi University in New York in 1960.
While at Michigan State, he was a member of the first Men's Varsity Soccer team and he met the love of his life, Phyllis Harkness and they were married in 1957,
He worked as a mechanical engineer for Raytheon Missile Defense, Varian Associates, Computervision, Polaroid and held several consulting positions. In the late 1960s, he owned Micronic Machine and Tool Company. He retired in the early 2000s.
Mr. Burger moved to Bedford in 1960 and was very active in his children's lives. He will be remembered as a longtime soccer coach of Team Flag.  He had his pilot's license and kept his plane at Hanscom Field.
In retirement, he moved to Brewster, Mass. where he enjoyed golfing, auto racing, and spending time with his companion of 19 years, Alice O'Connell.  He moved back to Bedford in recent years to be closer to his family.
He was predeceased by his wife, Phyllis, his daughters, Jana Kay, Julie Anne, and Katherine Irene Burger, and his brother, Wayne Burger.
He is survived by his daughter, Leslie Ringuette and her husband Paul of Bedford, one son, David Burger and his spouse Michael Spoonauer of Mamaroneck, New York, two grandchildren, Michael Paul Ringuette and his wife Ashley Anne of Bedford and Julie Anne Ringuette also of Bedford and a great-granddaughter, Aisling Mae Ringuette. He is also survived by his sister-in-law, Marion Burger of Watsonville, California.
Visitation will be held at the Bedford Funeral Home, 167 the Great Rd., Bedford, on Saturday, November 9, from 1:00 to 4:00 P.M.
Burial will be private.
