Tillie Turecky Medvid passed away May 6, 2021 with her devoted husband by her side at the age of 99, in Burlington, Massachusetts. Adored wife of 69 years of Nicholas Medvid; cherished mother of two daughters Gwen Mann and Patricia O'Driscoll; and beloved grandmother of five grandchildren Lindsay & Lara Mann and Daniel, Matthew & Eve O'Driscoll.

Tillie was born on May 9, 1921, in St. Joseph, Missouri to the parents of Ukrainian immigrants Elizabeth & Paul Turecky. She grew up in Detroit, Michigan where she later married her husband, Nick in 1951.

In Tillie's own words:

"In June 1942, I graduated with a bachelor's degree, School of Education from Wayne State University. Following graduation, I was employed as a physical education teacher at Courville Elementary School, Detroit, until June, 1943. I joined the war effort, working at the Chrysler Tank Arsenal, during the summer of 1943. There was a great campaign to enlist women into the armed forces to take over positions that would release men into combat. I joined the United States Marine Corps during the summer, 1943. My training began at Camp Lejeune, N.C., beginning October 1943.

After a series of training courses, I was promoted to Corporal, Radio Operator and sent to Supply Depot, Radio Material, for the Pacific Theater of War, San Francisco. After the war, I received my honorable discharge, enrolled at the University of Colorado at Boulder and received my master's degree in counseling.

Being a wife, mother, grandmother, with a career as a teacher for over forty years, I retired in 1988 in California!"

Upon retirement, Tillie and Nick spent time with Gwen and Robert, Patricia and Gerald and their five grandchildren sharing Ukrainian recipes, stories and inspiring life-long adventure.

After turning 94 Tillie and her husband Nick left their long-time friends in Los Angeles, California to move to Burlington, Massachusetts to be closer to Gwen and Robert.

Tillie Medvid will be always loved, always in our hearts and remembered by her family and friends.
