Susan (Duerfeldt) Corey died on October 4, 2025. She was 91. She was born in Annapolis, MD, the daughter of the late RADM Clifford Henderson and Jane (Seaman) Duerfeldt. She is survived by her husband, Donald, her sons Matthew and Peter, and daughter Brooke. She was predeceased by a son, Douglas, and her brother, Clifford H. Duerfeldt, Jr. ("Pete").

Her father was a Navy aviator, and the family moved frequently between his new duty stations while she was growing up. She attended and graduated from the University of Vermont and was a Registered Nurse. While RADM Duerfeldt was stationed in London, England, in 1958, she went to visit her parents. There she met LTJG Donald Corey, who was also stationed there. They enjoyed each other's company, and Sue and Don were married in a Unitarian church in London, England.

After Don's release from active duty, they lived in the San Francisco area for a few years and then moved to MA. They settled in their Bedford home on Page Road in 1965. It was an ideal location for Sue's love of animals. The first pony arrived within weeks, and for the next 40 years many horses, ponies, chickens, ducks, geese, rabbits and ferrets, iguanas, and a variety of other animals shared the household. She had a huge influence on many neighborhood kids in getting them interested in horseback riding and animal care.

For some time, Bedford schools sent children on field trips to Sue's mini farm. She gave carriage rides at school picnics and participated in parades and other events. Shortly after Bedford TV began operations, it did a program about Sue and her animals. She was told that it was Bedford TV's first program ever filmed outside its studio.

She was a good horseback rider and was a member of, and rode with, the Old North Bridge Hounds hunt club for years until she could no longer safely ride. She served on its staff, and she showed their hounds at foxhound competitions with other clubs.

She inherited a cottage in Scituate, MA, overlooking the mouth of the North River. When Mass. Audubon Society began protecting piping plover nests on the adjacent beach, she became very involved with the marking and protection of endangered piping plover nests. Audubon Society staff continue to enjoy easy access to the beach from her property.

Sue became fond of schipperke dogs, originally a Belgian barge dog breed. She raised and showed them, including some champions. She became rescue coordinator and placed well over a hundred rescues of that breed in new homes. She had scrapbooks filled with photos and letters of appreciation from dozens of families thanking her for her help.

There will be a memorial service at First Parish in Bedford, 75 Great Road, on Tuesday, October 14, at 2 PM.
