Ssg Loring
Evans Lord
Dec 27, 1916 — Mar 21, 1945
It is with solemn honor that we announce the return and interment of Staff Sergeant Loring Lord, United States Army Air Forces, who was killed in action over Germany on March 21, 1945, and remained missing for nearly 80 years. SSG Lord was recently identified and will finally be laid to rest with the dignity he so greatly earned.
Born December 27, 1916, Loring was raised in Somerville, Massachusetts, by his loving parents, Francis and Elsie Lord. He was a proud graduate of Somerville High School, remembered for his kindness, quiet strength, and unwavering sense of duty.
Enlisting in the Army Air Forces during World War II, SSG Lord served his country with distinction as an airman. On March 21, 1945, during a mission over Germany, his aircraft was shot down. Though long missing in action, his courage was never forgotten. His service was honored with the Air Medal and the Purple Heart.
Loring was deeply missed by his devoted parents and sisters, Ruth Lord and Frances Farrington. At the time of his death, he was engaged to be married to Betty Farrell, with whom he had shared dreams of a future that war so cruelly denied. While overseas, he sent many letters to his family and Betty, always closing with the phrase, "remember me to all" and signature "loads of love, Loring"
SSG Loring Lord is survived by his loving family, including his nieces Alice Howard and her husband Tom, and June Axtell and her husband Richard. He is also fondly remembered by his great-nieces and nephews: Elizabeth Sawyer and her husband Dave, Amy Hendl and her husband Richard, Richard Axtell and his wife Mary, and Maj. Charles F. Axtell, USAF (Ret.) and his wife Melissa. His legacy continues through many great-great nieces and nephews.
Returning to Boston Logan Airport on Thursday, May 29, at 3:50 PM, he once again will be home in Massachusetts. He will be escorted by his great-great niece, 2d Lt. Katherine E. Hendl, USSF aboard a flight captained by his great nephew, Maj. Charles F. Axtell, USAF (Ret.).
SSG Loring Lord will be interred on Saturday, June 7, at 1:00 PM, at Woodlawn Cemetery, 302 Elm Street, Everett, Massachusetts, alongside his parents and beloved sister Ruth. His family and community welcome all who wish to honor his memory and sacrifice and remember him to attend.
His bravery, selflessness, and devotion to country will never be forgotten. May he rest in peace.
