Obituary

Salvatore V. DeVellis, 85, of Billerica and formerly of Bedford, died on Oct. 22, 2022.

Born August 15, 1937, to Salvatore DeVellis and Florence (Valente) DeVellis of Somerville.

Sal attended Somerville High School and went on to earn a mechanical engineering degree at Northeastern University.

Sal retired from Raytheon Missile Defense Systems where he was a managing engineer charged with design and installation of missile systems as well as the Patriot "Scud Buster" Missile to defend the United States.

Sal also served honorably in the National Guard. Raising his family in Bedford, he sat on the Bedford Planning Board for many years, was an active member of Knights of Columbus and St. Michael's parish.

He immensely enjoyed his family and 15 grandchildren, especially at their summer home in Moody Beach Maine, which was his "happy place."

Sal is survived by his wife of 61 years Margaret "Kathy" (Sullivan) DeVellis and their four children. His son Stephen DeVellis and his partner Kimberly Starrett of Pocasset, former daughter-in-law Megan O'Connor, and their children Michael DeVellis, Kristin Popusoi and her husband Vlad and Matthew DeVellis. Daughter Karen Heffernan-Brady, and her husband Mark Brady of Westborough, their children Will and Kathryn Heffernan, Chris Brady and his wife Carissa and their son Bowen, Scott and his wife Alicia, and Tucker Brady. Son James and his wife Nicole of Foxboro, their children Danielle DeVellis and her husband Ben Grant, Brian and Jamie DeVellis. Son Brian DeVellis and his wife Denise of Billerica, and their children Steven, Anthony, and Angelina DeVellis. Predeceased by his brothers Gennaro and Robert DeVellis and son-in-law William Heffernan. Also survived by many nieces and nephews, who affectionately loved him as "Uncle Butch."

Visitation will be held at the Bedford Funeral Home, 167 Great Rd., Bedford, on Thursday, October 27, from 4:00-7:00 PM.

A Mass of Christian burial will be held at St. Michael Church, 90 Concord Rd., Bedford, Friday, October 28, at 10:00 AM.
