Obituary

Ruth Kent Davies, wife for 41 years of the late John A. V Davies, M.D., died Thursday, December 6, 2012, at the age of 100 years at Carleton-Willard Village, Bedford, MA. She was a former resident of Brookline and Falmouth, MA, and spent many summers in Manchester-by-the-Sea, MA, and at South Harbour on Cape Breton Island, Nova Scotia.
Born in Winthrop, she was graduated from Wakefield High School and Wheelock College. She pursued her lifelong interest in early childhood development, teaching at the Beaver Country Day School in Chestnut Hill in the 1930s. Later she served as the President of the Board of Trustees of the Nursery Training School of Boston until it became the Eliot Pearson School under Tufts University. She was also a member of the Boards of the Ruggles Street Nursery School and of the James Jackson Putnam Center.
After raising her family in Brookline, she received an M. Ed. in 1965 from the Harvard Graduate School of Education and taught for twelve years in the primary grades of the Underwood School in Newton, before retiring to Falmouth, MA with her husband.
At the age of fifty she learned to sail at the Manchester Yacht Club. In Falmouth, she was a member of the Garden Club and the Woods Hole Women's Club. Throughout her life she enjoyed knitting, embroidery, and gardening. In 1991 she moved to the Carleton-Willard Village.
She leaves three sons, John A. K. (Tony) Davies of Weston, Mark I. Davies of Harpswell, ME, and Michael H. Davies of Weston, their spouses, 7 grandchildren, and 7 great grandchildren. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be sent to the Development Office, Wheelock College, 200 The Riverway, Boston, MA 02215.
