Roy Edward Mallory, of Bedford, died peacefully on December 5, 2022. Born in Pittsfield, Massachusetts, and raised in North Andover, Roy was the son of the late Edward and Eleanor Mallory (DeFusco).

Roy graduated from Tufts University in 1971 with a degree in electrical engineering. Friends remember him as a warm, witty, engaging, and musically talented man who was instrumental in getting the Tufts radio station, WMFO, on the air. After the construction of the WMFO studios, it was up to Roy alone to wire the whole thing and make it work. He did it, and on schedule. Through the years, Roy also drew on his love of music and his technological skills in designing and building many speakers, and he contributed articles to various audio publications.

For his entire career, Roy worked at ADE Corporation, most recently for the spin-off company KLA-MicroSense, based in Lowell. Although trained as an EE, Roy had a very broad knowledge base that made him an invaluable resource for the company. Colleagues would come to him when they needed help with system engineering problems and much more. As the company's founder Robert Abbe put it, "No matter what you ask Roy to do, he'll figure out a way to do it."

In the course of his long career, Roy obtained many patents on behalf of the company. Beyond his official responsibilities, he mentored countless new employees, patiently teaching so much to so many.

A notable project to which Roy contributed was the LIGO experiment, for which three American physicists were awarded the Nobel Prize in Physics in 2017. The project resulted in the detection of gravitational waves—ripples in space and time created by the motion of massive objects in the universe. For the project, Roy devised a particular apparatus that was essential in keeping the noise down to the exact frequency needed by the scientists. Part of the device he developed drew from his patent involving linearizing a signal.

Roy played the piano beginning at a young age and especially enjoyed playing and listening to jazz. He also loved walking, hiking, bicycling, sailing, furniture building, and exploring coffee shops. He particularly cherished the frequent trips he made to Martha's Vineyard and coastal New Hampshire and Maine, as well as his travels throughout the western United States and Canada.

Roy is survived by his loving wife Sylvia Mallory (D'Alessandro) of Bedford, as well as many dear and devoted friends and cousins.
