Robert J. Magovern's Obituary
Robert J. Magovern, 77, of Bedford died at his home surrounded by his loving family on July 4, 2014.
Mr. Magovern was born in Leominster on January 26, 1937, and he was the son of the late Dwight H. and Carrie F. (Smith) Magovern.
He attended Burdett College and Northeastern University and completed many hours of education and course work in business.
He was employed as an independent insurance agent for 40 years and he established Magovern Insurance Agency, located on the Great Rd. in Bedford in 1991. He retired in 2011.
Mr. Magovern served in the U.S. Air Force and Reserve from 1957 until 1963.
In 1961, he married Barbara L. Ernst and in 1962 they moved to Bedford.
While living in Bedford he became very involved with raising his sons, Scott and Daniel and devoted much of his free time to Masonic service. He was a Colonel of the Aleppo Shrine Temple Units in 1994, a Past President of the Minuteman Shrine Club, the Founding Captain for the Aleppo Shrine Minutemen which began in 1974 and he also had extensive involvement with the DeMolay International Battle Green Chapter of Lexington. Recently, he received his fifty year pin for membership in the Simon W. Robinson Masonic Lodge of Lexington. He was also a longtime member of the First Baptist Church of Bedford.
An avid hunter, he enjoyed spending time at his home at Merrymeeting Lake in New Hampshire.
He was the beloved husband of Barbara (Ernst) Magovern, devoted father of Scott and his wife Kathryn of North Chelmsford and Daniel and his wife Christina of Hudson, NH, dear brother of Janet Stoffregen of Peabody and Dwight Magovern of East Longmeadow and loving grandfather of Cassandra, Emily, Evan and Connor Magovern.
His funeral service will be held at The First Baptist Church of Bedford, 155 Concord Rd., Bedford, on Fri., July 11, at 11:00 AM.
Visitation will be held at the Bedford Funeral Home, 167 Great Rd., Bedford, on Thurs., July 10, from 4:00 to 8:00 P.M.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the The First Baptist Church of Bedford, 155 Concord Rd., Bedford, MA 01730 or to Shriners Hospitals for Children, Burns Institute, Boston Unit, 51 Blossom St., Boston, MA 02114.
