Robert A. Dennison Jr., 88, of Carlisle, died at his home surrounded by family on April 11, 2017.
He was born in Boston on May 6, 1928, and was the son of the late Robert A. and Elisabeth (Wilde) Dennison.
Known to family and friends as Bob, he was raised in Reading. He attended Reading High School and graduated from Admiral Farragut Academy, New Jersey. He studied economics at Harvard University, Class of 1950.
He served in the Army in Korea during the Korean Conflict, and was honorably discharged as a Master Sergeant in 1954.
Bob was employed as an office manager by Dennison Organ Pipe Manufacturers in Reading for many years and later worked at W.A. Wilde in Holliston.
After retiring, he worked as the Dog Officer for the Town of Carlisle for 32 years, a position he held until 2015. He was also active in Carlisle's Foss Farm Community Gardens and volunteered as the garden manager for over 20 years. He was an active member of the VFW Post 6556 in Littleton. He was also an active member of the Chelmsford Cribbage League.
He and his wife Nancy were very passionate about their sled dogs and racing. They moved from Reading to Carlisle in 1966 to allow more freedom and space to enjoy their hobby. They traveled all over New England and Canada and Bob served two separate terms as President of the New England Sled Dog Club.
He was predeceased by his wife Nancy (Hatch) Dennison, daughter, Debbie Mello and sister, Ann Connors.
He is survived by his sons, Robert E. Dennison of Carlisle and Scott W. Dennison and his wife Suzanne of Windham, NH, and four grandchildren, Kaitlynn Mello, and Sara, Laura and Stephen Dennison; and his friend Betty Cochran.
Visitation for family and friends will be held at the Bedford Funeral Home, 167 Great Rd., Bedford, on Wed., April 19, from 4:00 to 7:00 P.M.
Private burial is planned.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the National Wildlife Association, P.O. Box 1691, Merrifield, VA 22116, the VNA Care Network and Hospice, 100 Trade Ctr., Woburn, MA 01801 or an animal charity of one's choice
