Richard E. Welt, 91, of Bedford, died on January 28, 2014, in Worcester, MA.

Mr. Welt was born in Somerville on May 22, 1922, and he was the son of the late Fred E. and Ida N. (Baker) Welt.

He was a graduate of Somerville High School, Wentworth Institute, Chester School of Dental Laboratory Technology, and Northeastern University where he earned his degree in mechanical engineering. He also attended Dartmouth College and the Choate School in Wallingford, Connecticut for a year.

During World War II, he served in the U.S. Navy from 1943 to 1946. He was honorably discharged with a rank of Aviation Ordnanceman, (Aviation Turret Mechanic) Third Class.

He was a former resident of Arlington and had lived in Bedford for sixty years.

Mr. Welt was a member of the First Church of Christ, Congregational in Bedford and served as the Institutional Representative for the Boy Scout troop at the church. He enjoyed many outings and camping with the scouts.

He was also a longtime member of the Corinthian Lodge A.F. & A.M. of Concord.

Retiring in his late 50s, he enjoyed skiing, sailing, oil painting, gardening and auto repair.

Mr. Welt was predeceased by his wife Evelyn (Severance) Welt in 1999 and his second wife, Faye (Peterson) Welt in 2011.

He is survived by his daughter, Cynthia Janik and her husband, Carl of Holden, his son, Robert Welt and his wife, Lauren of Wake Forest, NC, nine grandchildren, Rebecca Giguere and her husband, Lee, Matthew, Peter, Andrew and Susannah Janik, Christine Dowling and her husband, Brian, Jason Welt and his wife, Kari and Nicole and Melissa Welt and five great grandchildren.

His funeral service will be held at the First Church of Christ, Congregational, 25 The Great Rd., Bedford, on Monday, February 3, at 11:00 A.M. Visitation will be at the funeral home on Sunday, February 2, from 2:00 to 4:00 P.M. only.

Interment will be in Mt. Wollaston Cemetery in Quincy, MA.
