Philip P. Carvey, 82, of Bedford, MA,  passed away on July 10, 2025, with his family at his side.

He was born on October 21, 1942, in Illinois, the son of the late Matthew P. and Gertrude M. Carvey.  He contracted polio at the age of 10, at the height of the epidemic, the disease affecting his legs.  He realized that any dream he had of becoming a professional golfer was no longer possible; and that to succeed in life he needed to use his brain.  While a Boy Scout in high school he earned the rank of Eagle Scout.  Philip graduated from Illinois Institute of Technology in Chicago with a Bachelor's degree and then earned his Masters in Electrical Engineering and Computer Science at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.

Phil worked for many companies over the years, including a number of start up ventures.  Always a problem solver, he was awarded more than 50 patents, many in conjunction with other individuals.  Among other interesting projects, he worked on the implementation of GPS and on monitoring devices used to assess the physiological status of Army Rangers.  Computers were his livelihood, and his home was filled with the latest technology, the intricacies of which he shared with his family.  He instilled the importance of good scholarship in his children and grandchildren.

His talents were not limited to electrical engineering. He could build or repair just about anything and was comfortable using any tool.  He built not only a porch but also a very large deck, a garage and a shed.  Nothing seemed beyond his ability.  Once he disassembled and then reassembled the transmission on his car.  He loved to tinker and teach.  If he could apply the laws of physics or mathematics to a problem, so much the better.  He always had a pad of quadrille paper close at hand and several blue mechanical pencils in his pocket.

He enjoyed hiking and camping with his family in the national parks, particularly Glacier National Park, and would spend weeks planning these trips.  He enjoyed playing golf and ping pong and was a voracious reader.  He had a wonderful bass voice and sang for many years in church choirs and choral groups, most recently with the Concord Chorus.

He met his wife, Barbara, at a ballroom dancing class.  They danced their way into one another's hearts, and six months later they were married.  He is survived by his wife of 56 years, loving children Sarah (Dan Housman), Christina (Nicholas Howard), Andrew and Matthew; cherished grandchildren Madeline, Zachary, Eliza, and Charlotte Housman, Mia, Elson and Cerenna Howard; his brother Paul (Kathy), sister-in-law Deborah Anderson, brother-in-law Robert Anderson (Gillian), sister-in-law Susan Anderson, and brother-in-law Charles Anderson (Kimberley).  He is also survived by many loving nephews, grandnieces, grandnephews and cousins.  He was predeceased by an infant son William, sister-in-law Jane Carvey, and brother-in-law Richard Anderson.

A memorial service will be held at Trinity Episcopal Church, 81 Elm St., Concord, MA 01742, on Saturday, September 20, 2025, at 11 AM.
