Martha Catherine Maloney, a lifelong resident of Bedford, passed away peacefully at Carleton-Willard Village on June 30, surrounded by family. She was 92 years young.
Born November 25, 1924, in Boston, Mass., she was the daughter of the late Giuseppe and Maria (Berlinghieri) Basile. She was raised on their farm in Bedford, helping with the family fruit and vegetable stand on North Road.
Martha was a graduate from Lowell State Teachers College and went on to teach in Lexington and Bedford elementary schools.
She was a longtime member of St. Michael's Catholic Church, was an active member in town including Women's Club, volunteering into her 80s in Bedford schools to tutor students, participating in a variety of Council on Aging events including taking Italian classes in her 90s. She loved to draw, walk, bake cookies, and spend time with family and friends. She had a marvelous sense of humor, was loving, kind, caring, and enjoyed talking with all she met. Martha's fondest memories are of the childhood farm in Bedford, especially the goats, watching the neighborhood children growing up on Dudley Road, and of Popponesset Beach on Cape Cod, where she spent summers.
Martha is preceded in death by her husband of 47 years, Walter H. Maloney. She is survived by two daughters, Judith Maloney and her husband Michael Lye of Rhode Island, and Jean Johnson and her husband David of Colorado. Martha was the sister of Sal Basile of NH and the late Nicolina Rogowski and Stefano Basile. She is also survived by her grandchildren Conrad and Natalie Johnson, numerous loving nieces and nephews, great nieces and nephews, and many close friends.
A celebration of Martha's life will be held Wed., July 5, from 5:00until 8:00 p.mat Bedford Funeral Home. A Funeral mass will be celebrated in St. Michael's Church, 90 Concord Rd., Bedford on Thursday, July 6, at 9:00 A.M.followed by interment at Shawsheen Cemetery in Bedford. The family wishes to thank all the wonderful staff and companions at Carleton-Willard Village.
