Madeline Hsing-Sing Chen

March 14, 1942 - July 19, 2026

Born in 1942 in Taichung, Taiwan, Madeline Hsing-Sing Chen 謝幸杏 was the eldest of four sisters and two brothers. Her parents, Yen Tang Hsieh 謝燕堂 and Ching-Hsia Chang Hsieh 謝張清霞, deeply valued education and enrolled her in an English‑speaking Catholic school, setting the foundation for her lifelong love of learning and faith. After graduating from Providence University in Taichung, Madeline immigrated to the United States with the support of her beloved Aunt Julie, who was like a sister to her. She continued her studies at DePauw University in Indiana, earning her master’s degree. During this time, she deepened her relationship with future husband, Jiun‑Hsiung (Philip) Chen 陳俊雄 through daily handwritten letters.

In 1968, Madeline and Philip were married in Princeton, NJ where Philip was completing his PhD. It was there that they began building their family, welcoming their first son, Kennard P. Chen. Madeline spent much of her life supporting her husband and his career as the family followed his work to Ohio, Texas, Arizona and California. In Ohio, they welcomed their second son, George D. Chen.

Madeline held a lifelong passion for real estate as a realtor and a licensed broker. In 1982, she was happy to settle in Bedford, MA where she built a strong and loyal client base across Bedford, Lexington, and the surrounding communities. Each holiday season, she looked forward to reconnecting with clients bringing gifts of calendars, plants, and chocolates.

Madeline loved every opportunity to socialize and her laughter was contagious. She was an avid ballroom dancer and a cherished regular at the Bedford Legion’s Friday dance nights, where she and Philip spent many evenings dancing the night away - often the last to leave. Her love for music also extended to classical pieces, which were her favorite to wake up to.

A devout Catholic, Madeline was a member of St. Michael's Parish in Bedford. Her faith was central to her life; she participated in Bible study, read scripture in her free time, and carried a deep connection to God. She also found community and shared faith with St. James the Greater Catholic Church 聖雅各伯天主堂 in Boston where she formed cherished, lifelong friendships. Her family takes comfort in knowing she has been welcomed home to God in Heaven.

Madeline is survived by her husband, Jiun-Hsiung Chen; her son Kennard P. Chen and his wife Ya-Ting Yang of Chelmsford, MA; and son George D. Chen and his wife Patty Huang of Westford, MA. She leaves behind three grandchildren - Graysen, Lockelan and Olivia - whom she loved to dote on. She is also survived by her two sisters Amy Mei-Jiun Hsieh 謝玟君 and Chia Ying Hsieh Wang 謝佳瑩 in Taiwan. Madeline is predeceased by her father, mother, two brothers and one sister.

Family and friends will gather to honor and remember Madeline during visiting hours on Sunday, July 26 from 2:00 PM to 5:00 PM, at the Bedford Funeral Home, 167 Great Rd, Bedford, MA. A funeral Mass will be held at St. Michael’s Parish, 90 Concord Road, Bedford, MA on Monday, July 27, at 10:00 AM. Interment will follow at St. Bernard’s Cemetery, 47B Bedford Street, Concord, MA.
