Louis C. Tompkins, age 79, passed away on Monday, November 15, surrounded by his loving family in Hudson, NH.

He is survived by his four children from his marriage with Maureen (Foley) Mason, Steven Tompkins (RI) and his wife Aislinn, Karen Crowley (MA) and her husband Jim, Christine Nibblett (DE) and her husband Rick and Scott Tompkins (NH) and his girlfriend Catherine Spencer, his four grandchildren, Casey Tompkins, Karina Crowley, Shannon Crowley and Dylan Nibblett, sisters, Virginia (Farnum) O'Connell, Jean (Tompkins) Barnes, his former wife Marsha (Kirkwood) Tompkins (AZ) and several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his sister, Bernice (Farnum) Cedrone; mother Gladys "Regina" (Warren) Tompkins and father William C. Tompkins.

Throughout Lou's life he worked in many capacities but the two passions that he will be most remembered for is the time he spent giving back to the community and caring for those in need. Lou started his community service in the late 70's simply as a way to be closer to his children through volunteering as a Little League coach in Bedford, MA. He was revolutionary from the start, with coaching the first Little League team that included the first two girl ball players. Little did he know that he would then spend the next two decades mentoring and supporting young boys and girls, coaches, umpires and parents as a coach, volunteer administrator, and field manager for teams in the 10-12, 13-14 and summer leagues in the Bedford Babe Ruth League. Lou had a talent in promoting the importance of community sports for youth and turned his attention to providing additional opportunities for youth across Massachusetts when he became involved in the Bay State Baseball Tournament of Champions. Lou led the Bay State League for 17 years and when the Board of Directors expanded the league to include older athletes, the league honored the years of dedication by Lou Tompkins by naming this league in his honor. The Lou Tompkins Allstar Baseball League has grown to an annual summer tournament for high school all-star players and future college players throughout Northeastern Massachusetts, representing 48 communities.

Retirement took Lou to Tucson, Arizona, but his commitment to helping others did not dissipate. Lou spent the next 15 plus years as the chief executive officer of the Tucson Hospitality Inn providing a safe home and resources for families and patients in emergency healthcare situations. He understood the importance of family presence in the time of stressful health situations including cancer treatment, transplant recipients, and trauma victims, regardless of their financial means. His dedication to this service ensured patients had the family support needed to provide the added strength toward recovery. He was a member of the Board of Trustees of the National Association of Hospital Hospitality Houses for several years.
