Katharine Copeland
Newhall
Mar 24, 1933 — Jul 23, 2025
BEDFORD
Katharine Copeland Newhall (Katums, Copey, and Kate) 92, of Bedford, MA and longtime resident of Manchester, MA died July 23, 2025.
She was born on March 24, 1933 to Frances (Pitcher) Copeland and Lewis Covell Copeland, and raised in Palmerton PA, spending her summers in Marblehead MA.
Kate was educated at Emma Willard Academy and Smith College. She volunteered on the Julia Child cooking show and worked for many years for Harvard and then HUD in D.C. She was actively involved in many organizations, including the Manchester Garden Club and the Chilton Club. She also greatly enjoyed sharing her knowledge and love of learning as a docent for the Peabody Essex Museum.
She married John Breed Newhall of Marblehead in 1973 and they moved to Manchester MA where they raised a family and spent many years 'messing around in boats'. Following in her mother's footsteps, sailing was always a passion, sparked by her youth at the Pleon Yacht Club where she raced brutal beasts near Marblehead. She and John joined the Manchester Yacht Club and enjoyed cruising with friends and family, primarily aboard sailing yacht Samoset in downeast Maine and the Canadian Maritimes.
Kate was also a strong skier and spent many a weekend with family and friends in VT at Mad River Glen where she owned a house. In her later years Kate loved sitting in the living room of "The Hutte" looking out at the mountains and watching the birds. She loved to knit and created many simple and highly complicated socks, Christmas stockings, sweaters, and blankets for family and the Fragments Society. Kate received much joy from looking at the natural world, reading about it, discussing it, and doing her part to improve it. And above all else she loved spending time with and receiving hugs from her grandchildren.
Predeceased by her sister, Ann (2003) and her husband John (2021), Kate leaves her two children, Hannah Sanger (and Matthew), Rebecca Newhall (and Travis Reese), her two stepchildren, Mary Higgins (and John), Charles L. Newhall (and Anne Nichols Hill); and her five grandchildren: Elizabeth Higgins, John Newhall, Bridget Higgins, Skye Newhall, and Benjamin Reese. And her daughter-in-law Jazz Newhall.
The family will host a gathering at the Manchester Yacht Club on Monday, August 25th at 11 am.
In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Essex Greenbelt ( https://ecga.org/ ), and Vermont Land Trust ( https://vlt.org ).
