Joseph P. Serra Jr., 79, of Bedford, died on June 1, 2016.
He was born in Boston and was the son of the late Joseph and Mary (Preziosi) Serra.
Mr. Serra was raised in Boston and at the age of 12 moved to Medford. He was a graduate of Medford High School, class of 1954. He continued his education at Lowell Tech and completed his degree in electrical engineering at Northeastern, graduating in 1982.
In the 1950's he was a TV repairman and he went on to work for Raytheon for close to 40 years. At Raytheon he worked in several capacities including electromagnetic energy exposure control and quality control in the Missile Systems Division.
Mr. Serra lived in Bedford for the past 52 years and was a member of St. Michael Parish. In his retirement he enjoyed volunteering at Bedford TV.
He will be remembered by his family as a very caring and devoted family man who was willing to help out everyone and his ability to bring a smile to anyone's face with his jokes and sense of humor.
He was the caring husband of Loretta (Scolly) Serra, devoted father of Dianne McGaunn and her husband Scott of Topsfield, Roberta Mahunik and her husband Joey of Fergus Falls, MN and Michael Serra and his wife Sandra of Leominster, loving grandfather of Mahayla Serra and Joseph and Matthew McGaunn.
His funeral will be held from the Bedford Funeral Home, 167 Great Rd., Bedford, on Monday, June 6, at 8:00 AM, followed by a funeral Mass in St. Michael Church, 90 Concord Rd., Bedford, at 9:00 AM. Visitation will be at the funeral home, on Sunday, June 5, from 1:00-5:00 PM. Interment will be at Mt. Auburn Cemetery, Cambridge.
