Obituary

Joseph M. Massaro, 58, of Bedford, MA, died peacefully at home on October 19, 2022, surrounded by his loving and supportive family.

Joe was born to incredible parents, Anthony and Anne Massaro, in Cambridge, MA.  He was raised in Stoneham, MA and attended Austin Prep, graduating in 1981. He went on to receive his Bachelor of Science in Mathematics from Boston College in 1985, and he completed a PhD in Mathematics/Statistics from Boston University in 1994.

In 2006, Joe married Monica (Elmore) Massaro, another Boston University graduate and statistician.  They spent 16 years raising their two beautiful girls, Anna and Karina, and many nights "talking stats."

Most of Joe's career was spent as a professor of Biostatistics, Mathematics and Statistics at Boston University, where he was beloved by his students and recognized for his excellence in teaching through numerous university awards. He was passionate about teaching and mentoring students, and he inspired so many.  He was a valuable member of the Department of Biostatistics at the Boston University School of Public Health, and his warm and witty presence will be sorely missed.  Colleagues unanimously describe Joe as brilliant, kind, and humble.  He also had an outstanding career as a consultant to many biopharmaceutical companies, providing his statistical knowledge and expertise to companies in the Boston area and beyond, resulting in numerous drug approvals that now and will forever benefit people of all ages.

Joe was an avid New England sports fan.  In particular, he enjoyed watching the New England Patriots, often attending home games with his friends.

Above all, Joe loved spending time with his family, especially his daughters, Anna and Karina.  Many Sundays were spent eating breakfast at Grampy and Nana's house, and many early mornings were dedicated to preparing Joe's famous meatballs for annual Thanksgivings gatherings.  He cherished these and countless other family get-togethers.

Joe is predeceased by his mother, Anne (D'Agostino) Massaro.  He is survived by his wife, Monica, their children Anna and Karina, of Bedford, MA; his father, Anthony Massaro of Andover, MA; his brother and wife, Anthony and Jacqueline Massaro of Winchester, MA; his sister and husband, Maria and Stephen Galuna of Andover, MA, along with many adoring nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles and cousins.

A Mass of Christian burial will be held at St. Michael Church, 90 Concord Rd., Bedford, on Saturday, November 5, 2022, at 11:30 AM.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to a fund set-up by the Boston University School of Public Health to support Anna and Karina's education, something that was incredibly important to Joe. https://gofund.me/c575e453
