Joseph L. Ignazio "Papa Joe", 86, of Bedford, died suddenly at his Bedford home on April 10, 2016.
He was born on Feb. 6, 1930 in Boston's North End and was the son of the late Ideati and Marie Ignazio.
Mr. Ignazio lived in Bedford for the past four years, but spent most of his life in Cambridge.
He was married on September 9, 1951 at St. Peter's Church in Cambridge to the former Mary J. Messuri. Together they raised six children.
A veteran of the Korean Conflict and a graduate of Wentworth Institute of Technology, Joseph earned his master's degree in engineering from Northeastern University. He began his career as a civil engineer with the US Army Corp of Engineers in November of 1953 and retired in 1997. At the time of his retirement, he was the Chief of Planning for New England.
He was a very faithful and devout Catholic, a longtime parishioner and a lector for more than 30 years at St. Peter's Parish in Cambridge.
He was husband to his beloved wife of 64 years, Mary J. (Messuri) Ignazio, devoted father of Edward Ignazio and his wife Eileen of Plymouth, Annemarie "Amy" Andon and her husband Steve of Waltham, Susan Frazier and her husband Patrick of Bedford, John "Jack" Ignazio of Arlington, Nancy Griffiths and her husband James "Jim" of Bedford and James "Jim" Ignazio and his wife Stephanie of Acton. Dear brother of Ann Lohr of Beverly and the late Louise Fennell and loving grandfather of Lisa and Daniel Ignazio, Kathryn Andon, Patrick, Stephen and Brittany Frazier, Gabrielle, Ian and Collin Griffiths and Julia and Mia Ignazio. Uncle to many nieces and nephews and beloved friends.
His funeral will be held from the Bedford Funeral Home, 167 Great Rd., Bedford, Thurs., April 14, at 9:00 A.M. followed a funeral Mass in St. Michael Church, 90 Concord Rd., Bedford, at 10:00 A.M.
Visitation will be held at the funeral home on Wed., April 13, from 4:00 to 8:00 P.M.
Burial will be in Mount Auburn Cemetery in Cambridge.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Multiple Sclerosis Society of Greater New England, 101A First Ave., Waltham, MA 02451.
