John Pasquale Toscano, 85, passed away peacefully after a brief illness, on Sunday, August 2, 2026, surrounded by his family. John will be remembered above all as a devoted husband, father, and grandfather whose loyalty, quiet strength, integrity, and deep love of family defined his life.

John was born and raised in Westerly, Rhode Island, to Vincent and Catherine (Castagna) Toscano. After graduating from Westerly High School, he attended the University of Maryland, where a friend applying to optometry school sparked his interest in the profession. With encouragement from his parents, John went on to earn his doctorate from the New England College of Optometry.

 While in college, he met the love of his life, Mary Ellen Lombardi, on the Opening Day game of the Boston Red Sox. They married on June 25, 1966 and celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary this past June. From making the long drive to Franklin, Massachusetts every weekend during their courtship to supporting Mary Ellen throughout her career, John was her quiet, steadfast partner in every stage of their life together.

 John and Mary Ellen began their married life in Mystic, Connecticut, where he opened an optometry practice. Two years later, a fortuitous meeting with a retiring optometrist brought them to Mansfield, Massachusetts. John practiced optometry there from 1968 until his retirement. For over 30 years, he cared for generations of families and became a trusted part of the community.

John enjoyed photography, bicycling, cars, and collectibles. He was rarely without a camera and loved capturing everything from family vacations and birthdays to everyday moments through the lens. He spent countless hours in his darkroom developing photographs that his family will treasure for generations. His love of cars evolved from a prized '56 Ford to a Datsun 280Z and later to several Teslas. He was also an avid collector of watches, antique clocks, and special pens.

Retirement brought them to several places they enjoyed calling home, including Onset, Massachusetts; Lewes, Delaware; Naples, Florida; Rockland, Massachusetts; and finally Bedford, Massachusetts, where they settled to be closer to family. They also enjoyed many adventures in their beloved VW van, took dozens of cruises, and were fortunate to see much of the world together.

 He is survived by his beloved wife, Mary Ellen (Lombardi) Toscano; his daughters, Julie Toscano Sequeira and Lisa Toscano Brecher; his son-in-law, Neil Sequeira; his five grandchildren, Maximus, Siena, and Sofia Sequeira, and Anna and Nicholas Brecher; and his brother, Joseph Toscano, and his wife, Christine. Being Grampy was one of the greatest joys of his life. He delighted in each of his grandchildren, and they adored him.

 Although he rarely sought the spotlight, John's greatest accomplishment was the life he built through quiet sacrifice, unwavering commitment, and steadfast love for his family. His legacy of loyalty, dedication, and devotion to family will live on in all whose lives he touched. He will be deeply missed by his family and all who knew and loved him.
