James H. Elgin, age 78, formerly of Carlisle, passed away on December 2, 2018. He was the beloved husband of Betty J. (Maronette) Elgin.

Born in Chicago, Illinois on February 3, 1940, Jim as the son of the late Howard and Elsie Elgin of Hinsdale, Illinois. He graduated from Hinsdale Township High School in 1958. He received his bachelor and master's degrees in electrical engineering from Cornell University and a master's degree in business from Boston University.

After graduation from Cornell, Jim joined the U.S. Navy and served aboard the aircraft carrier USS Lexington in Pensacola, Florida as a fire control officer. He and Betty were married on September 7, 1963.

His first job was with Honeywell in Waltham, Massachusetts. He spent to remainder of his career with Digital Equipment Corporation and Cambridge Technology Partners. He also taught computer programming courses at Northeastern University and Middlesex Community College in their evening program.

In addition to his wife Betty, he is survived by a daughter, Lynn Elgin of Chelmsford, two grandchildren, Scott Monger of Framingham and Ashely Monger of Brighton, a sister, Jane Karasick and her husband Bernard of Wayne, Illinois, a brother, Robert Elgin and his wife Sally of Ann Arbor, Michigan and another sister, Dorothy Butler and her husband Patrick of Derry, New Hampshire and several nieces and nephews. Jim was predeceased by his son David, who passed away on November 22, 1989.

A Carlisle resident since 1982, Jim served on the town finance committee, the parish committee at the First Religious Society and Council on Aging Board. He enjoyed being with his family and friends, had a great sense of humor and enjoyed telling jokes and stories. He loved traveling to Europe as well as camping, sailing and spending time on Cape Cod.

Visitation will take place at Bedford Funeral Home, 167 Great Rd., Bedford, on Friday, December 7, from 4:00-7:00 PM.
