Obituary

Gregory W. Swider passed away at his family home on August 19, 2020, of cancer.

Greg was a 1986 graduate of Bedford High School. Despite suffering aggressive cancer at 21, he recovered and went on to earn a Mechanical Engineering degree at the University of Massachusetts Amherst in 1991, and a Master's Degree in Electrical Engineering from the University of Massachusetts Lowell in 2004.  He worked as an engineer at several companies throughout the Boston area, and in New Zealand.

Greg was a tremendous athlete: cyclist, runner, snowboarder, sailor, scuba diver, and fearless hiker who could scale Mt. Katahdin up and back in a day. He was an avid musician, playing guitar in the post-punk '90s band Shotgun Remedy , and other rock bands, later branching into jazz guitar. He loved to read and discuss serious economics and political science. Greg blessed us with a hilarious and quirky sense of humor, which could pivot the most turgid debate into uproarious laughter, making us realize how silly it all was. Best of all, Greg was a loyal friend, brother, and son.

In his final years, in the midst of undergoing treatment for his own cancer recurrence, he became the primary caregiver for both his father, William Swider, (who predeceased him in 2019) and his mother, Eileen. Greg was also deeply cherished by his four older siblings, Sarah, Michael, Karen, and Stacy. Along with his siblings and mother, he is survived by his 7 nephews and nieces: Natalie, Ethan, Mason, Mara, Noelle, Victoria, and Anna.

Greg's life will be celebrated with friends and family at Shawsheen Cemetery, on corner of Shawsheen Rd. and Great Rd., in Bedford, on Saturday September 19, at 9:30 AM.

In lieu of flowers, we ask that you go outdoors, enjoy a bike ride or hike, or make a contribution to a trails conservancy.
