Gertraud "Trudy" Coady, 84, of Bedford, died on February 28, 2018 in Lexington.

Trudy was born in Altdorf, Germany in 1934 and was the daughter of the late Johann and Maria Krammel.

As a child, Trudy and her family suffered greatly through the war years with some very harrowing experiences in the early months of 1945. After the war, Trudy continued to be raised and educated in the state of Bavaria, Germany. As a young adult she was a huge hiking enthusiast and loved to explore the mountains and glaciers of the Alps. In 1960, while working at the US Army base in Munich, she met Capt. Richard "Dick" E. Coady, who was stationed there. Following a brief courtship, they were married in 1961.

After leaving Germany in 1963, they were stationed at Fort Devens, Massachusetts. They welcomed their only child, Allan, in April, 1964 and sadly, Dick died in Oct, 1964. After Dick's death, Trudy was very torn between moving back to her family in her native Germany and permanently staying in the USA. Ultimately, she decided it was best to raise her son in America and settled in Concord, MA and began working at the Brooks School in Concord.

In 1968, she moved to Bedford where she was a well-known active member of St. Michael's Parish.

Trudy was an avid tennis player and prolific gardener. In her greenhouse, she grew hundreds of tomato plants from seed each year. Her largest garden was planted with 750 tomato plants, which required four hours of hand watering per day. She shared her bounty with many friends and neighbors.

She is survived by her son, Allan Coady and his wife, Jean Coady of Bedford, her sister, Elizabeth Krammel of Germany and four grandchildren, Sgt. Patrick Coady, Melinda Coady, Diana Coady and Henry Coady. She was predeceased by her sisters, Martha Wiesmeier and Marie Krammel and brothers Hans and Paul Krammel.

Visitation will be held at the Bedford Funeral Home, 167 Great Rd., Bedford, on Fri., March 9, from 5:00 to 8:00 P.M. Funeral procession from the funeral home on Sat., March 10, at 8:00 A.M. followed by a funeral Mass in St. Michael's Church, 90 Concord Rd., Bedford, at 9:00 A.M.
