George C. Swallow, Jr., 93, of Bedford, died at his home on February 6, 2014.

Mr. Swallow was born in Somerville, Mass. on January 2, 1921, and he was the son of the late George C. and Hazel (Steed) Swallow.

He was a longtime resident of Bedford and graduate of Lexington High School. He later earned his degrees in education from State Teachers College at Fitchburg.

His career in education was as a teacher of industrial arts in the Winchester public schools. During the 1960s and 1970s, he also owned and operated a Jenney gas station and garage on The Great Rd., in Bedford.

Mr. Swallow was also a proud veteran of World War II. He enlisted in the Navy on August 7, 1942 and was discharged on September 16, 1947. He was trained as a naval aviator, and was very skilled in his field of electronic equipment operation.

Following the war, he continued his service in the Naval Reserves completing thirty years with a rank of Lieutenant Commander.

He was a former member of Bedford's American Legion Post 221, a member of the First Church of Christ Congregational, the Shriners where he was a jester, and the William Parkman Lodge A.F. A.M. of Winchester.

He is survived by his wife, Ellen (Meharg) Swallow, three sons, David G. and his wife, Barbara of Tewksbury, Gary T. of Charlotte, NC and Brian R. and his partner, Greg Johnson of NYC and his brother, Robert and his wife, Clara of Amherst, NH.

He was predeceased by his brother, Herbert Steed Swallow.

Visitation will be held at the funeral home on Mon., Feb. 10, from 4:00 to 8:00 P.M.

A funeral service will be held at the funeral home on Tuesday, Feb. 11, at 11:00 A.M.

Interment with military honors will be held at Shawsheen Cemetery in Bedford.
