George Michael (Mickey) Payne, 77, of Carlisle, MA, passed away unexpectedly on April 11, 2025, at Emerson Hospital in Concord, MA.
George was born in Quincy, MA to George Arthur Payne and Beatrice Knight Payne on December 16, 1947.
He grew up in Abington, MA and went to South Shore Vocational Technical High School and graduated in 1965. He went on to earn a Bachelor of Science degree in Business Administration from Stonehill College.
George worked as a Design Engineer for the Polaroid Corporation for over 10 years and was part of the team that designed and developed the original SX-70 instant camera. George continued his career as an engineer and engineering manager for several manufacturing companies in the Boston area before retiring in 2007.
When not working, George enjoyed classic cars and oval track racing. On many occasions he took his family out to cruise nights in his 1967 Chevy Impala SS which he lovingly restored in the mid-nineties. He was crew chief to his son's Quarter Midget race team setting track records and placing 4th regionally in 2001.
Until recently, George was actively involved in the lives of his grandchildren attending practices and going to all home and away games. George was an active supporter of the Republican Party and on more than one occasion expressed his opinions at town meetings.
George is survived by his son Richard Payne (fianceé Laura Thompson) of Concord, MA and his daughter Bianca Payne of Boston, MA. He is also survived by his ex-wife and friend Joan DiRaimondo Payne, his grandchildren Germain, Jaxson, Vincent, Mackenzie and Lilianna, his brothers Gordon Payne, Roy Payne and Douglas Payne, several nieces and nephews and many friends at Benfield Farms and the Carlisle Council on Aging. He is preceded in death by his father George A. Payne, his mother Beatrice Knight Payne and his brother Kenneth Payne.
A Celebration of Life will be held at Bedford Funeral Home 167 Great Road, Bedford, MA on May 3, 2025, at 12:00pm. All are welcome.
