George G. Deranian's Obituary
George Gregory Deranian, 86, a retired Air Force Colonel, died peacefully, surrounded by his family, at his home in Bedford, Massachusetts on October 27, 2014.
A first generation American, George believed in the opportunities of public service, and devoted his life to serving this nation, his community, and his family as a military officer.
George was born the second son of Elmas Kurkjian Deranian and Charles K. Deranian. After graduation from Weaver High School in Hartford, Connecticut, George was accepted to the United States Naval Academy, an accomplishment of which he was most proud.
George was stationed at Ellington AFB in Houston, Texas when he and Jacky were married in 1954. George later earned a BS in Electrical Engineering and was assigned to the Naval Academy as an instructor. He attended the University of Connecticut graduating with an MBA in 1963. From Griffiss AFB in Rome, New York and after a tour of duty in Viet Nam in 1966, he was assigned, again, to Maxwell AFB as Director of Space in the Warfare Systems School. One of his final tours of duty was at Hanscom Field AFB, as Commanding Officer of over 24,000 personnel stationed throughout the world. George retired from the Air Force in 1976.
Over the years, George immersed himself as a community volunteer, and along with his wife, devoted many hours to his church at each duty station. George served on school and church boards. He was active in Little Theater and volunteered as a piano accompanist for nursing homes. He was a corporate fundraiser for the United Way and a lifelong supporter of civic projects.
George was a loving husband, father, and grandfather. He was deeply admired for his generosity, kindness, and courage. His joy was his family. His home was filled with great love and happiness. George was a gourmet cook, studied classical piano at the Hartt School of Music, and handball player. He and his wife travelled extensively. George believed in the goodness of all men and worked to improve the lives of those less fortunate. We will miss him deeply.
He was the devoted husband of Jacquelyn (Sasser) Deranian for 60 years. Loving father of Helen Deranian of Roslindale, Candace Deranian Shoemaker and her husband David of Oakland, CA and John Deranian and his wife Anne Clinton Deranian of Memphis, TN. Dear grandfather of Virginia Rose and Peter Shoemaker and Heather, Benjamin and Lillian Deranian. Uncle of Janet, Paul and Stephen Deranian. He was predeceased by his parents Charles and Elmas (Kurkjian) Deranian, his brother Mike and sister-in-law, Norma King Deranian.
A memorial service will be held at Hancock United Church of Christ, Congregational, 1912 Massachusetts Ave., Lexington on Fri., Oct. 31, at 2:00 P.M.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made in memory of George Gregory Deranian at Wounded Warrior Project, www.woundedwarriorproject.org, and PROJECT SAVE, www.projectsave.org, an organization committed to protecting and promoting Armenian history.
