Frank Bauman, 75, former longtime Recreation Director in his hometown of Bedford, died on December 2, 2013, in Burlington.
Frank was born in Cambridge on March 23, 1938, and he was the son of the late Leslie and Irene (LaPlante) Bauman.
He was raised in Belmont and was a graduate of Belmont High School, Class of 1956. He earned his Bachelor of Science Degree in Business Administration from Curry College in Milton in 1960.
He was also an Army veteran serving in the post–Korea era.
Frank served the Town of Bedford as Bedford's first Recreation Director for 30 years. Appointed to this position in 1972, he thoroughly enjoyed developing youth sports in Bedford as an administrator, coach and proud parent. Under Frank's leadership, the Recreation Department expanded its scope to include a well-rounded slate of programs including art, science, music, ski, special events and much more.
Along with many of his friends, Frank was instrumental in the development of Springs Brook Park, the town's seasonal swim facility. He also established the Kids' Club in 1993, a program that serves many families with supervised care for school children before school, after school and during vacations.
He will be remembered for his kindness, generosity and concern for youth, realizing the importance of childhood and making sure that children were involved in programs of their choice.
Following his retirement in 2003, he went to work for Enterprise in Billerica where he enjoyed another career for ten years.
Frank was a gregarious, compassionate, warm, welcoming man. His affability was contagious and he was blessed with many, many friends.
He is survived by his wife, Jeanne (Garrity) Bauman, three sons, Michael and his wife Melissa of Billerica, Thomas of Bedford and David and his wife Janet of Billerica, his sister, Patricia Draper of RI, seven grandchildren, Madison, Morgan, Jake, Haleigh, Olivia, Ella and Jack and many loving nieces and nephews.
His funeral Mass will be held at St. Michael Church, 90 Concord Rd., Bedford, on Friday, December 6, at 9:00 A.M. Visitation at the Bedford Funeral Home,on Thursday, December 5, from 4:00 to 8:00 P.M.
Interment will be in Shawsheen Cemetery in Bedford.
