Ethel Marie Smith of Carlisle, Mass., died July 10, 2014, following a 34-year battle with Alzheimer's disease. She was the wife of Brig. Gen. (Ret.) David H. Smith. She was born in Mexico, Maine, the daughter of the late Everett F.W. and Suzanne M. (LeBlanc) McKellick. She leaves behind her children and their spouses, Karen A. Smith (Recco) and Maurice Morin of Litchfield, N.H.; Susan G. (Smith) and Hugo Smith of Beverly, Mass.; David and Sherrill Smith of Marlowe, N.H.; and Lisa (Smith) and Thomas Aciukewicz of Harvard, Mass.; two sisters Patricia A. Conroy of Yakima, Wash., and Beatrice Louise Dittami and her husband, Peter, of Framingham, Mass; and a brother, Stephen Daniel McKellick, and his wife, Dorothy, of Otter River, Mass.; seven grandchildren: Jonathan Recco, Ethan Recco, Rebecca Smith, Jessica Smith, Tristan Smith, Aidan Aciukewicz, and James Aciukewicz, as well as many cousins, nieces, and nephews.

Ethel was a graduate of Gardner High School and Fitchburg Teachers' College. She was an elementary school teacher in Vernon, Conn.; Billerica, Mass.; and Chelmsford, Mass.

Ethel was an active member of St. Irene's Parish in Carlisle. She had served on the church council and was the music director and organist for many years. A lay Eucharistic Minister, she served at St. Irene's as well as many Army installations around the country when her husband was on active duty. She had worked as a bank teller and a handwriting analyst. She had served as an officer at several Officers' Wives' Clubs, and was a Cub Scout den mother.

Relatives and friends are kindly invited to attend visiting hours at Bedford Funeral Home, 167 Great Road, Bedford, Mass., Sunday, July 13, from 3-7 p.m. A Memorial Mass will be celebrated Monday, July 14, at 11 a.m. at St. Irene's, 181 East Street, Carlisle, Mass.
