Obituary

Ernest L. Scheyder, of Chelmsford formerly of Bedford was called home to be with his Lord on June 1, 2014. He was surrounded by his loving family. Ernest was born 21 November 1923 in Cambridge, MA. Son of Louis Scheyder and Marie Rodiek. Ernest graduated from Medford High School 3 June 1941.

Ernest was nineteen when he enlisted in the Army Air Corps on 5 December 1942 in Boston. He was part of the greatest generation. Basic training was in Atlantic City, NJ. He also attended Army Administration School at Arkansas State College in Jonesboro, AR. Following that he went to Fort Bragg in NC. While there he was assigned to the 59th Troop Carrier Squadron, 61st Troop Carrier Group, 52nd Wing. The 52nd Wing included all of the C47s and gliders in the service.

Ernest traveled overseas on the troop transport ship U.S.S. West Point from New York to Casablanca, Morocco. Worked in squadron headquarters. Traveled from Casablanca to Tunis, Tunisia and then from Tunisia on a British troop transport ship to Palermo, Sicily. Traveled from Sicily to Scotland and then from Scotland to England. During D-day Ernest was stationed at Barkston Heath Air Field in England. From England Ernest traveled by plane to France. Corporal Ernest Scheyder left the European Theater of Operations (ETO) from LeHarve, France in the summer of 1945. During VE-day Corporal Ernest Scheyder was in Brazil heading home.

Decorations and Citations were Good Conduct Medal, Presidential Unit Citation, and EAMET Campaign Ribbon with seven Battle Stars and one Oak Leaf Cluster. Ernest was discharged from the service 25 December 1945 at Westover Field in Chicopee, MA. Started working for Sears, Roebuck and Company 8 January 1946. Married Ruth Ziegler on 1 October 1955. He retired from Sears after forty years of service in February 1986. Ernest was an active member of The Lutheran Church of the Savior in Bedford. He was also an adult leader for Boy Scout Troop 194 in Bedford. Ernest enjoyed music and loved to sing.

Ernest is survived by his loving wife of 58 years, Ruth L. (Ziegler) Scheyder, son, Kenneth Scheyder and wife Lois of Westford, MA, daughter, Carolyn and her husband Jeff Kroese of Herndon, VA, son, Rev. Paul Scheyder and wife Susie of Niantic, CT. Also survived by grandchildren, Marie and Emily Scheyder of Westford, MA, Bethany, Lani and Jessica Kroese of Herndon, VA and Jacob, Michael, Daniel, Mary and Hannah Scheyder of Niantic, CT.
Visitation at the Bedford Funeral Home, 167 Great Rd., Bedford, on Wed. from 4 to 8 P.M. Funeral service at The Lutheran Church of the Savior, 426 Davis Rd., Bedford, Thurs. at 10 A.M. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to The Lutheran Church of the Savior for the "Scheyder Memorial", 426 Davis Rd., Bedford, MA 01730.
