Obituary

Elizabeth Claire Herzog, "Libby" passed away on July 23, 2023.  Libby (they/them) was born in Concord, Massachusetts on April 7, 2003, to Elaine Cathleen and William David Herzog.  Libby spent their early childhood living in Groton, MA where they attended the Groton Community School.  The family moved to Bedford, MA in the summer of 2011 and Libby entered 3rd grade in the Bedford School system.  Libby graduated from Bedford High School in 2021.

While in Bedford, Libby developed many close friends in the community and is remembered as caring, generous and creative.  In middle school, Libby developed a strong interest in advocacy and social justice.  Among their accomplishments, Libby and their friends drafted revisions to the Bedford Middle School dress code to reflect greater gender equity.  Libby went on to become a member of the First Parish in Bedford, Unitarian Universalist.

Libby loved learning and developed many strong relationships among peers and faculty at Bedford High School.  The faculty inspired Libby's passion for photography, art and creative writing. Libby excelled academically and was inducted into the National Honor Society.  Libby was a member of the ski team and ran cross country.

After taking a gap year and attending part-time classes at Middlesex Community College, Libby began undergraduate studies at the University of Vermont in the fall of 2022.  This spring, Libby completed their first year at UVM majoring in Gender Studies.  At UVM Libby developed strong bonds with a close-knit group of friends and began rock climbing as a hobby.

Libby and their family enjoyed spending time together outdoors.  Libby was an avid, expert skier, enjoyed hiking the White Mountains, and always made a point of going outside to dance in the rain.  Libby will be remembered for making place cards for the family's holiday dinners, inviting others to do art with them, and for their goofy sense of humor.

Libby is survived by their mother, Elaine, their father, William and younger brother, Miles.  They are also survived by their grandparents, Mary and William Edmund Bicknell of Lexington, MA and Carol Herzog of Athens, GA.  Libby is also survived by many loving aunts, uncles and cousins.

A service will be held on Friday, August 4, at 1:00 PM, at The First Parish in Bedford, Unitarian Universalist, 75 Great Road, Bedford, MA.  A reception at The First Parish in Bedford will follow from 2:00 – 5:00 PM.
