Edward Caleb Stickney – Son of George Carver Stickney and Mildred Beatrice (Sawyer) Stickney, born November 19, 1920 in Newburyport, MA. Graduated Newburyport High School in 1938 and received an Associates Degree from Wentworth Institute of Technology in 1941. In June of 1996, Ed was awarded an Honorary Bachelor of Technology Degree from Wentworth.

He worked at Harvard University Underwater Sound Laboratory.
In 1944 he was drafted into the United States Navy and located in Fort Lauderdale, FL at the secret naval underwater sound lab helping to develop sonar for torpedoes.

After WW II, he went to work at the Boston University Optical Research lab which had contracts with the US Government for aerial photography and its support equipment. This later became Itek Corporation located in Lexington, MA.

Ed retired in January 1983 from Itek as a mechanical designer after 37 and ½ years and at that time was the employee with the longest service.

Edward was married November 23, 1943 to Evelyn Mae Bollman, daughter of George Leon Bollman and Elsie Evelyn (Nutting) Bollman of Newburyport, MA. A son, Kent George Stickney, was born August 17, 1957, and died October 20, 1995 when killed by a drunk driver.

Ed was a volunteer at the Bedford Free Public Library for many years as well as a part time fill-in custodian.

Ed was an avid downhill skier into his eighties, tennis player, bowler, cyclist, golfer and walker.

He was a member of the Pilgrim John Howland Society, National Society of Old Plymouth Colony Descendants, Sons and Daughters of the First Settlers of Old Newbury, Friends of Plum Island Lighthouse, Lighthouse Preservation Society, Newburyport Maritime Society, Peabody-Essex Museum, Friends of the Bedford Public Library, where he was treasurer for many years, and life membership in Bedford Historical Society (president in the 1960s), New England Historic Genealogical Society, and Friends of Bedford Depot Park, where he was chairman and clerk.

For many years he played fife and drum as a member of the Bedford Minuteman Company. He spent many summers at the Minuteman National Park at Concord Bridge as a volunteer-in-park describing colonial clothing, workings of the musket and playing the fife and drum.
For over 50 years the Stickneys researched the bells cast by Paul Revere and his sons and were considered the world authority on the subject. They published a booklet listing the Revere bells still in existence and visited every bell except one, located in Singapore. For 30 years they lectured on the subject throughout New England.

His wife, of 72 years, Evelyn, predeceased him on Feb. 2, 2016. He is survived by two nephews, David and Mark Weatherby, both of Hampton, NH, and two nieces, Laurel Larivee and Elaine Weatherby, also of Hampton NH.

Calling hours will be Sunday, April 23, 2017 from 1:00 PM to 3:00 PM at the Bedford Funeral Home, 167 Great Rd., Bedford, MA. Burial services will be private.
