Obituary

Dorothy Dunn, beloved mother of five, grandmother of seven, and great-grandmother of four, passed away on June 23 after a brief illness.

Born Dorothy Murphy in the Bronx, NY, she was one of four children of Irish immigrant parents who instilled in her the values of hard work, deep family ties but also gave her a love for warm conversation and good humor. Dorothy attended Catholic schools and later graduated from business school. She began her career as an administrative assistant at an aircraft design and manufacturing company in New Jersey, where she met her future husband, Robert Dunn. The two honeymooned in Bermuda, an experience Dorothy cherished and spoke of fondly throughout her life.

After living in New Jersey for a few years and welcoming two children, Dorothy and Robert moved to Bedford, Massachusetts, where they would raise their family of five. While Robert worked as an engineer by day and attended law school at night, Dorothy managed the busy household with care and efficiency. She was deeply involved in her children's lives, making sure homework was completed and volunteering as a Den Mother for Cub Scouts and a leader for Brownies.

A defining moment in Dorothy's childhood, a near-drowning in New York City's East River, left a lasting impression and motivated her to ensure all her children learned to swim. Each went on to swim competitively from ages 5 to 17.

Once her children were older, Dorothy returned to the workforce as the administrator for the Psychology Intern Program at McLean Hospital, where she worked for 25 years. She found joy in many hobbies: bowling in a league, playing doubles tennis with friends and her husband, and enjoying bridge well into her 80s. A devoted reader, she especially loved biographies and fiction.

Dorothy had a warm Irish spirit and will be deeply missed by her children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and all who had the pleasure of knowing her.
