Donald E. Holmstead, of Bedford, passed away peacefully in his sleep on January 20, 2021.

Don is survived by his wife, Susan (Murray) Holmstead (married for 55 years), his son Gene Holmstead of Boston, and daughter Karen Holmstead of Nashua NH.  Other loving surviving family members include: Dr. Edward and Phyllis Connolly of Weston MA, Robert and Joan Cassidy of Yardley PA, and many nieces and nephews.

Don graduated from Arlington High, Newman Prep, and Fitchburg State University.  He had a long career as a lead machinist for many companies.

In retirement, he enjoyed transporting schoolchildren with Bedford Charter for several years.

He was skilled at woodworking, making furniture, and improving his home with an extensive collection of tools.

His summers were spent socializing and playing tennis at the Heritage Club of Concord, where he was a board member and served as president.

Don was always active and enjoyed sports like skiing, hockey, bowling, golf, and tennis.  He had passion for Boston professional teams, always cheering and clapping while watching the Bruins, Red Sox, and Patriots.  He enjoyed attending games, including BC football.  His love of sports extended to coaching his daughter's softball team and youth hockey for Bedford Recreation.

Don cared about his community, always helping neighbors and volunteering at spring/fall cleanups at the Heritage Club.  He was a loving husband, devoted father, loyal son, generous friend, amusing uncle, who embraced time spent with extended family.

He will be remembered for being friendly toward everyone, always having a smile on his face, and making people laugh with his subtle humor.

Funeral services will be private for invited family and friends at the Shawsheen Cemetery, Bedford. In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made to Bedford Recreation Department, 12 Mudge Way, Bedford, MA 01730.
