David N
Smith
Oct 3, 1938 — Dec 17, 2020
David N. Smith passed away peacefully on December 17, 2020 at his home in Bedford, Massachusetts with Phyllis, his wife of 60 years singing by his side.
Dave was born October 3, 1938 in Holyoke, MA to Fredrick Gorham Clark Smith Jr. and Marion Smith. He was predeceased by both of his siblings, Allen Smith and Elizabeth (Betsy) Lennenberg. He attended Mount Hermon School, where he met the love of his life, Phyllis (nee Harvey). They married 1960. Dave graduated from Cornell University, earning a B.A. in 1960. He went on to UMASS Amherst to earn a master's degree in history in 1961.
Life brought Dave and Phyllis two wonderful children, Clark Smith (Tiffany) and Andrea Smith (Bob Morse). Both married and brought love and laughter with grandchildren Carter Smith, Kate Morse, and Chris Morse who loved spending time with their grandpa.
Dave taught ancient and American history at Tilton School in NH. There, he also coached football, hockey and track and was the junior class advisor. After leaving Tilton, the family returned to UMASS Amherst to live so Dave could work on his PhD. Later, David taught history and economics at Fisher College in Boston, enlightening generations of youth about our national story and how economics influences historical choices. Driving students to apply critical thinking skills to their academic studies and their lives.
The house was always filled with music, singing or playing classical compositions flowing in the living room, office, or in the classroom for his students. Dave and Phyllis also supported music education for their grandkids.
Summers found the Smiths hosting a plethora family and friends at their Amherst, Massachusetts home. Grandchildren spent months playing in the pool and enjoying field trips throughout New England.
In retirement, Dave and Phyllis moved from their longtime family home in Amherst to Bedford, allowing them to enjoy plenty of quality time with their daughter and her family.
At this time, no funeral plans are being made. After COVID is under better control, a celebration of life will be planned for his immediate family.
