Obituary

Mr. Daniel Francis Xavier O'Reilly, age 68, most recently a resident of Harwich, MA, and previously of Bedford, MA, Milwaukee, WI, Waltham, MA, Palo Alto, CA, Bonn, Germany, Schweinfurt, Germany and Quincy, MA passed away peacefully on July 13th, 2015.

Dan was born in Boston on November 30, 1946 and was the son of Daniel L. O'Reilly and the late Isabelle (Hogan) O'Reilly.

Dan was a 1964 graduate of Waltham Public High School and graduated from Boston College in 1968 with a degree in physics and mathematics. Dan served as a medic in the U.S. Army from 1969 to 1970. He attended Stanford University from 1968 to 1974 and received a Ph.D. in mathematics in 1975. In 1972, he received a stipend from the DAAD for a year of study at the Math Institute of the University of Bonn. He attended the Jesuit Novitiate in the New England Province from 1974 to 1975. Dan taught mathematics and computer science at Boston College, Simmons College and Marquette University from 1975 to 1979. In 1979, he was hired as an econometrician by Data Resources, Inc. in Lexington, MA and worked for DRI and McGraw-Hill for ten years. After leaving DRI in 1989, Dan was one of the founders of Desktop Data Inc., which later became NewsEdge Corporation after going public in 1995. In 2000, Dan was one of the founders of AlphaSimplex Group in Cambridge. In 2003, Dan joined Compete, Inc. as Chief Information Officer and in 2007 he joined Tamale Software as Director of Knowledge Analytics. In 2010, Dan joined Clear Ballot Group as a consultant.

From 1990 to 1999, Dan served on the Bedford School Committee. He also continued to teach mathematics, computer science and econometrics part-time at Boston College, Simmons College and Clark University. In 2010, Dan became a regular communicant at St. Joan of Arc's Church in Orleans, MA where he was also a lector. Prior to 2010, Dan was a communicant at St. Michael's Church in Bedford, MA, where he also served as a lector, CCD instructor and a member of the RCIA team.

Dan will be remembered for his compassion, his life-long love of education and learning, his strong faith, his fondness for nature and exploration, his passionate love/hate relationship with the Red Sox and all Boston sports teams, his enthusiasm for old movies, dance moves at weddings, penchant for taking long swims in the ocean (a little too far from shore), and for being a wonderful Poppi to his grandkids.

Dan is survived by his beloved wife of thirty-eight years, Patricia M. O'Reilly, his four beloved children: Theresa M. O'Reilly of Harwich, Christine E. Larimore of Bedford, Erin M. Lagasse of Orleans, and Michael F.X. O'Reilly of Brighton; son-in-law, Evan C. Lagasse; four smiling grandchildren: Chase M. Larimore, Cohen J. Larimore, Ava G. Lagasse and McKenzie R. Lagasse; his father: Daniel L. O'Reilly of Waltham, three sisters; Kathleen M. Rigby and her husband Don, Geraldine R. O'Neill and her husband Steven, and Eileen A. McCarthy and her husband James; along with numerous cousins, nieces, nephews and many hiking buddies.

Family and friends will honor and remember Dan's life by gathering together at the Bedford Funeral Home, 167 Great Rd., Bedford, on Thursday July 16th from 4:00 to 8:00 p.m. and again on Friday, July 17th at 9:00 a.m. with a funeral Mass to follow in St. Michael Church, 90 Concord Rd., Bedford at 10:00 a.m.
