LTC Charles D. Amidon, Jr. (U.S. Army, Retired), 87, of Bedford, died on September 5, 2021, at the E.N. Rogers Memorial Veterans Hospital, surrounded by his loving family.

He was born and raised in Rome, NY, and was the son of the late Dr. Charles D. and Grace (Livingston) Amidon and brother of the late Kevin Amidon and Dr. Robert Amidon.

Following high school, he attended St. Bonaventure University with a B.S. in biology and then was commissioned into the U.S. Army in 1957. He served in Vietnam and deployed overseas numerous times.  He was stationed in Germany for nine years.

While in the Army, he earned a master's degree in Hospital Administration from Baylor University and became a Medical Service Corps Officer, holding numerous administrative and Inspector General positions. He retired in January of 1985 after 27 years of service.

Upon retirement from the Army, he served in Hospital Administration in the civilian sector until full retirement in 2000. He was very passionate about his service to his community and country.

When not chasing his wife of over 60 years or kids, his younger years were spent racing cars and boats, riding motorcycles and flying recreationally. He even won a demolition derby (much to his wife Helga's chagrin).

He was a member of the American Legion Post 221, the Knights of Columbus, Council 5292 and the Bedford Athletic Assoc. where he worked to bring the installation of lights to Page Field and a surface to the track at the high school.

He is survived by his wife, Helga G. (Schira) Amidon, his three sons, Charles D. Amidon, III and his wife Michele of Pelham, NH, Christopher D. Amidon of Bedford and Fredric Neil Amidon, DMD and his wife Joanne of York, ME, his brother, Dr. Joel Amidon of Rome, NY and sister, Mary Faith of Colonie, NY and four grandchildren, Jessica, Kaitlyn, Colin and Madeline Amidon.

Private funeral services will be held. Interment will be at Arlington National Cemetery.
