Bertha Knute, 98, a longtime Carlisle resident died on November 15, 2019, in Westford.
Mrs. Knute was born in Concord, MA and was the daughter of the late Benjamin C. and Emily T. (Hunnewell) Freeman. She was raised in Bedford on Springs Rd. and was a graduate of Lexington High School, Class of 1939.
Mrs. Knute enlisted in the Women's Army Corps in 1943 and served for two years overseas. She was honorably discharged as a Technician Fifth Grade. During the war, she met President Truman.
On June 8, 1946, she married Kenneth Knute. They were high school classmates in Lexington. Kenneth and Bertha raised three sons, Kenneth, Steven and Lawrence and moved to Carlisle in 1957.
Mrs. Knute worked briefly at Millipore in Bedford and loved to read and travel. She remained vibrant and active until the last few weeks of her life.
She was predeceased by her husband Kenneth, her sons, Kenneth and Steven, her brothers, Edward and Lawrence Freeman and two grandchildren.
She is survived by her son, Lawrence of Taunton, three grandchildren, William Knute of Carlisle, Kenny Knute of Taunton and Lonni Knute of Falmouth and three great grandchildren, Callie, Liam and Noel.
Visitation will be held at the Bedford funeral Home, 167 Great Rd., Bedford, on Mon., Nov. 18, from 5:00 to 7:00 P.m.
A graveside service will be held on Tuesday, November 19, at 11:00 at Green Cemetery, Bedford Rd., Carlisle.
