Dr. Barry W. Kort, 80, of Bedford, Massachusetts, passed away peacefully at home on July 9, 2025.

Born in Wichita, Kansas, on January 20, 1945, Barry was the son of the late Harold B. and Estelle (Cohen) Kort. He spent his formative years in Omaha, Nebraska, attending Benson West Elementary and graduating from Omaha Central High School in 1963. A gifted student with a lifelong passion for inquiry, he earned his Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering with High Distinction from the University of Nebraska in 1968, and went on to receive both his Master's and Ph.D. in Systems Theory from Stanford University through the prestigious Bell Labs Graduate Study Program.

Barry began his career at AT&T Bell Labs in Holmdel, New Jersey, where he served from 1968 to 1987 as a Distinguished Member of the Technical Staff in the Network Planning Division. His groundbreaking contributions earned him the Distinguished Technical Staff Award, one of the company's highest honors. After the breakup of AT&T, he continued his work in Massachusetts at the MITRE Corporation, where he helped lead engineering development for NASA's Space Station program.

Barry's later career reflected a deep curiosity about the emotional foundations of learning and understanding. As a visiting scientist at BBN Systems and later with the Affective Computing Group at the MIT Media Lab, Barry explored how feelings influence cognition, creativity, and collaboration. He was a pioneer in educational gaming and online learning communities, and was one of the founding members of MicroMuse, a groundbreaking virtual world that sparked imagination and discovery for countless learners.

He also dedicated over 25 years as a cherished volunteer at the Boston Museum of Science, where he brought science to life for thousands of children and families through hands-on exhibits and joyful, engaging conversation.

Barry is survived by his brother, Stephan Kort of Indiana; his nephew, Robert Kort; niece, Deborah Hoffman; and eight grandnieces.

He will be deeply missed not only by his family, but also by the many people whose lives he touched through his intellect, kindness, and mentorship. Whether in person or through spirited online conversations, Barry always made time for others; encouraging curiosity, critical thinking, and respectful dialogue. His wisdom and generosity left a lasting imprint on a wide circle of friends, students, and colleagues who will carry his memory forward with love and gratitude.
