Alfred

U.S. Veteran

Alfred L. “Fred” Dunn, 85, husband of Dolores L. (Simard) Dunn of Bedford, died at the Edith Nourse Memorial Veteran’s Administration Hospital, Bedford, surrounded by his loving family.

Born in Lynn, MA, he was the son of the late Fenwick and Evangeline (Nadeau) Dunn. Mr. Dunn was educated in the Lynn Public Schools. He worked at North Shore News in Lynn, as a truck driver, and at the Mitre Corporation in Bedford.

During the Korean War, Mr. Dunn joined the U.S. Army and was stationed in Alaska and abroad, including in Austria, and achieved the rank of Sargent. Fred’s three brothers also served their country during this same period.

Following his discharge, Fred began a lifetime romance with his loving wife Dolores, raising six children and living in Lynn, Salem, and Bedford MA. He treasured his time spent with his grandchildren and great grandchildren – Jason, Jennifer, Sienna, Sarah, Danielle, Erika, Ashley, Leah, Maddie, Jack, Noah, and Max – greeting them with a smile, a song or helping them color within the lines.

Dedicated to his family, Fred was known for his hard work, humor, and love of music. As an avid reader, he celebrated his Nova Scotia heritage through stories of the sea. He enjoyed his relatives and many friends and spent precious time at home with Dolores and as an amateur mechanic, carpenter, and electrician.

He is survived by Dolores, and by his six children, Annie Dunn and her partner Moshe Braner, of Essex, VT, Dan Dunn and his wife Katie, of Bedford, Dorothy Janotta and her husband Kim of Lyman, ME, Bill Dunn and his wife Rhonda of Blandford, Kathy Moore and her husband Russ of Topsfield, and Jim Dunn and his wife Mary Lou of Rochester, NH. He is also survived by brothers Bob, of Raymond, NH and George of Port Charlotte, FL and a sister Margaret Niska of Newburyport. He was predeceased by brother Fenwick Dunn, Jr. and sisters Ruth Cole, Alita Bergstrom, and Helen Plourde.

ARRANGEMENTS: Visiting hours for Mr. Dunn will be held on Friday, September 27, from 8:00 to 10:00 AM at the Bedford Funeral Home, 167 Great Road, Bedford, MA, to be followed by a funeral Mass at 11:00 AM at St. Irene’s Church, 181 East Street, Carlisle, MA. Relatives and friends are invited to attend. Interment will be in Shawsheen Cemetery, Bedford.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to the Alzheimer’s Association, Massachusetts/New Hampshire Chapter, PO Box 96011, Washington, DC 20090-6011, http://www.alz.org/manh/.
